New York based New Focus Recordings is an artist led label focusing on contemporary classical recordings that reflect a personal statement on the part of the artists. The label was founded by guitarist Daniel Lippel and composer Peter Gilbert in 2004, with engineer/composer Ryan Streber playing a huge role in its development since 2005. As with many other independent labels, they started this project because they wanted to have creative control over all elements of the recording and post-production process. Another priority for them, especially given the intricacy of so much contemporary music, is to make sure they gave the pieces the necessary time in the sessions and the editing process to capture dynamic performances that remained faithful to the details in the score. They strive to present the repertoire (through the programming, design, and notes) in cohesive albums that feel like works unto themselves, as opposed to collections of individual tracks. New Focus does not have any particular aesthetic agenda; despite our committment to contemporary concert music, they are also interested in older repertoire as well as releases in other genres.  [ less ]
